Manual Handling Education

The 2001 code of practice for Manual Handling describes Manual Handling as

"Any activity requiring a person to lift, lower, push, pull, carry, throw, move, restrain or otherwise handle any animate or inanimate object"

The HSE Act 1992 and the HSE Regulations 1995 require employers to take all practicable steps to ensure safety and health of employees and others while at work.

Therapy Works are able to customise manual handling training programmes to the needs of the organisation (eg specific equipment/products) to assist with meeting legislative requirements.  We consider it essential for employees to practice techniques and apply in normal work environments and training sessions are dynamic and interactive.

The following topics may be included in a training session:

  • Spinal awareness
  • Influences on musculoskeletal stress
  • Understanding the cumulative effect
  • Moving and handling principles
  • Standing and sitting postures
  • Basic ergonomics (LITE)
  • Risk assessment
  • Injury prevention and management
  • Exercise, stretches and warm ups
  • Problem solving and scenarios
